About Algernon Cadwallader
Hailing from Yardley, Pennsylvania, Algernon Cadwallader pairs the restless angles of math rock with the melodic instincts of Midwest emo. Stereogum has championed them as central figures in the emo revival, and the label fits a band whose arrangements lean on alternative tunings and off-time rhythms. Their lyrics were less brooding than the genre's reputation suggested, dwelling instead on everyday life and small personal moments. Cap'n Jazz and The Beatles are among the influences they cite.
Formed in 2005 from the ashes of Halfway to Holland, the band took its name from Yardley's first mayor. Their debut full-length, Some Kind of Cadwallader, appeared in 2008, and the Fun EP followed on Protagonist Music in 2009 before Parrot Flies arrived in 2011. Line-up changes saw Tank Bergman join on drums and Colin Mahony depart, leaving a trio, before the group split in 2012. They returned in 2022 with a North American tour and New Year's Eve shows at Johnny Brenda's in Philadelphia. In 2023 they announced tours of Japan, Europe and the UK, and their third album, Trying Not to Have a Thought, was released via Saddle Creek in September 2025.
