About As I Lay Dying
Taking its name from William Faulkner's 1930 novel, though its lyrics and music owe the book nothing directly, As I Lay Dying is a metalcore group from San Diego, California. Vocalist Tim Lambesis founded it in 2000 after leaving Society's Finest, and the first full line-up, including his Point of Recognition bandmate Jordan Mancino, arrived in 2001. Their catalogue now runs to eight studio albums, one split and two compilations.
Their 2003 album Frail Words Collapse reached No. 30 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart, and Shadows Are Security debuted at No. 1 on that chart in 2005, becoming their first release to enter the Billboard 200 at No. 35. An Ocean Between Us, their fourth album, peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard 200. The Powerless Rise, written over three years, arrived in May 2010 to critical acclaim, and Awakened followed in September 2012. A hiatus began in 2014 when Lambesis was convicted and sentenced to six years in prison for soliciting the murder of his estranged wife. Shaped by Fire came out in September 2019, and Through Storms Ahead followed on 15 November 2024, by which point Lambesis was the only member left.
