About Barry Can't Swim

Barry Can't Swim makes electronic music with a player's instincts. Born Joshua Mainnie in 1992, the Edinburgh producer and DJ took up piano at nine after his grandfather spotted a giveaway advert in the local paper, and later studied music at Edinburgh Napier University. He still calls himself more musician than producer, preferring instruments when building a track.

After the Amor Fati EP on Shall Not Fade in July 2021 and More Content on Ninja Tune imprint Technicolour Records in 2022, he released his debut album, When Will We Land?, through Ninja Tune in October 2023. It reached number 12 in the UK, won Best Dance Album at BBC Radio 1's awards and made the 2024 Mercury Prize shortlist. DJ Mag named him Breakthrough Producer in December 2023, he played Coachella in 2024, closing the weekend with a surprise back-to-back set with Bonobo, and earned a Brit nomination for Best Dance Act. Loner followed on 11 July 2025, with singles including Still Riding and Kimpton, featuring O'Flynn; it scored 84 on Metacritic. He headlined London's All Points East that August and has been nominated for Breakthrough Artist at the 2026 Brit Awards.
