About Beth Gibbons
Few voices in British music have sounded as weathered and as exposed as Beth Gibbons's. Born in Exeter in 1965 and raised on a farm with three sisters, she found her footing in Bristol, where a chance meeting with Geoff Barrow on a 1991 Enterprise Allowance course led to Portishead, the band whose singer and lyricist she remains. Her sound draws on Edith Piaf, Billie Holiday and Nina Simone, a lineage that shows in every phrase she sings.
Portishead's debut Dummy appeared in 1994, followed by two further studio albums and a live record. Her work beyond the band includes Out of Season, made with former Talk Talk bassist Paul Webb as Rustin Man, which reached number 28 in the UK Albums Chart in October 2002. In 2014 she sang Górecki's Symphony No. 3 with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, a performance released in 2019, and in 2022 she featured on Kendrick Lamar's "Mother I Sober". Her solo album Lives Outgrown followed in May 2024 and was nominated for the Mercury Prize.
