About Big Thief

Adrianne Lenker and Buck Meek met at a show in Boston, crossed paths again in Brooklyn as undergraduates, and became a duo before Big Thief took shape in 2015. They added drummer Jason Burger and Max Oleartchik, a bassist and longtime friend of Meek's; James Krivchenia, first a sound engineer, later took over on drums. The result is American indie folk that reviewers heard moving between field-recording intimacy, heartbroken pop and buzzy indie rock on the debut.

Masterpiece appeared on Saddle Creek in 2016, and Capacity followed in 2017, topping Bob Boilen's year-end list on NPR. After signing to 4AD in 2019 they released U.F.O.F. in May and Two Hands in October. The first was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the Grammys, while 'Not' was nominated for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance. Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You, a double album from February 2022, reached the Dutch top ten and earned another Best Alternative Music Album nomination, with 'Certainty' nominated for Best Alternative Music Performance. Oleartchik left in June 2024. Double Infinity, made with session musicians and released in September 2025, was their first album as a trio, and Joshua Crumbly joined the live line-up.
