Few American rock acts have sold as widely as Bon Jovi, the band formed in Sayreville, New Jersey, in 1983 around the singer Jon Bon Jovi. Critics credit them with bridging heavy metal and pop, a balance behind more than 130 million records sold worldwide. Original bassist Alec John Such left in 1994 and guitarist Richie Sambora in 2013, yet keyboardist David Bryan and drummer Tico Torres remain at the core.
The breakthrough arrived with Slippery When Wet in 1986, which yielded two No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, "You Give Love a Bad Name" and "Livin' on a Prayer". Keep the Faith in 1992 brought "Bed of Roses", and "Always" in 1994 became their biggest-selling single. A 2006 single, "Who Says You Can't Go Home", won a Grammy and became the first rock band single to top the country charts. The band entered the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006 and the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
