Christine and the Queens

About Christine and the Queens

Christine and the Queens is the project of Rahim Claude Redcar, a singer and songwriter born and raised in Nantes, who began learning the piano at the age of four. His path was reshaped by a trip to London, where the drag performers of Madame Jojo's in Soho inspired him, and the Queens became part of his stage name as a tribute to them. He describes his genre as "freakpop", a label that fits the blend of theatre and pop running through his work.

His early EPs, Miséricorde in 2011 and Mac Abbey in 2012, led to awards at the Printemps de Bourges and Les Francofolies de La Rochelle festivals and to a deal with the independent label Because Music. The debut album Chaleur humaine (2014) reached number two in both France and the UK, was certified diamond in France, and was a best-selling debut in the United Kingdom. Chris followed in 2018 and was ranked album of the year by Clash, The Guardian and The Independent, while Time named both "Girlfriend" and "People, I've Been Sad" song of the year. After La vita nuova (2020), an EP made in reaction to his mother's death, came Redcar les adorables étoiles (prologue) in 2022, Paranoia, Angels, True Love in 2023, and the more dance-inflected Hopecore in 2024.
