The Dallas Symphony Orchestra traces its origins to a single concert in 1900, when a group of forty musicians performed under the conductor Hans Kreissig. More than a century on, the American ensemble remains based in Dallas, Texas, with its main home at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in the Arts District of downtown. Under Andrew Litton, who led it from 1994 to 2006, it recorded Rachmaninoff's four piano concertos with Stephen Hough for Hyperion Records.
The orchestra has not played without interruption. It suspended operations during the First and Second World Wars, from 1914 to 1918 and from 1942 to 1945, and again in 1974 because of fiscal restraints. In 1945 it appointed Antal Doráti, under whom it became fully professional, and in 1956 Walter Hendl conducted Jascha Heifetz in the premiere of Miklós Rózsa's Violin Concerto. Jaap van Zweden became its 15th music director in 2007. In June 2018 the orchestra named Fabio Luisi its next music director, having first guest-conducted it in 2002, and in January 2021 it extended his contract through 2029.
