About Dark Star Orchestra
Dark Star Orchestra takes tribute literally: the Chicago, Illinois band rebuilds Grateful Dead concerts rather than simply playing the hits. From the Dead's roughly 2,500 performances over a 30-year career built on improvisation, they pick a show and reproduce the complete set list, song by song and in order. Phrasing, vocal arrangements and equipment shift to suit the era being recreated. That archival devotion has kept them on the road as an international touring act since 1997.
The band grew out of a conversation between guitarist John Kadlecik and keyboardist Scott Larned, sparked by a concept from their mutual friend Andrew "Tiny" Dofner. Their profile rose in November 1998, when Phish's Mike Gordon and Jon Fishman joined them at Martyrs' after their own show. The Washington Post soon called them "the hottest Grateful Dead tribute act going". They reached their 1,000th show in Greensboro in October 2004, and Scott Larned died in April 2005. Kadlecik left in 2009 to join Furthur, and Jeff Mattson became the permanent guitarist. The band marked its 25th anniversary with a tour in autumn 2022.
