Dead Man's Bones is a Los Angeles duo of Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields, and their appeal lies in an odd pairing of ideas: love stories about ghosts and monsters, sung alongside a children's choir. The two met in 2005 and discovered a shared obsession with the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland. As a boy Zach was so consumed by ghosts that he was sent to therapy. They played every instrument on their records themselves, and set strict rules in the studio: no click track, and no more than three takes per song.
Their self-titled debut came out on 6 October 2009 through ANTI- Records, produced by Tim Anderson of Ima Robot and featuring members of the Silverlake Conservatory Children's Choir, a group started by Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea. They also released videos for "In the Room Where You Sleep" and "Name in Stone", and toured the United States that autumn with a local choir at each show. "In the Room Where You Sleep" later featured on the soundtrack of The Conjuring. Following a 17-year hiatus, they released the single "Lost in the Night" on 27 October 2026.
