About Exploring Birdsong

Few progressive rock acts lean as heavily on keys as Exploring Birdsong, a Liverpool band who build their songs without a guitarist in sight. Instead, piano, synthesisers and bass stack into dense, melodic arrangements that feel full to the brim. The group took shape in 2017 when drummer Matt Harrison met singer and pianist Lynsey Ward while both were studying at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts; bassist and keyboardist Jonny Knight completed the line-up.

Their recorded career began in September 2019, when they signed with Long Beach Records, a sub-label of SPV GmbH. The debut EP, The Thing With Feathers, followed on 29 November that year to positive reviews, and a second, Dancing in the Face of Danger, arrived on 24 March 2023, also well received. Singles then arrived steadily, from "The Collapse" in February 2024 through "Weight in Gold", "Stitch" and "All I Lack", and "Romanticise" in November 2025. In March 2026 the band announced their debut album, Every House We Built, alongside the video for "You Like It Best When It Hurts".
