About Frank Huang
Frank Huang has spent his career moving between the concerto platform, the chamber stage and the orchestral desk. Born in Beijing in 1978, he moved to the United States at two and grew up in the Houston area, where his violin studies began. Since 2015 he has been concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic, following spells as first violinist of the Ying Quartet, professor of violin and chamber music at the Eastman School of Music, and concertmaster of the Houston Symphony from 2010 to 2015. One New York magazine critic admired his 'total grasp of each musical idiom', a judgement that goes some way to explaining his demand as a soloist.
A run of competition prizes marked his early career: second at the 1999 Premio Paganini in Genoa, first at the 2000 Joseph Joachim competition in Hanover, and the 2003 Naumburg Competition in New York. His New York debut recital at Alice Tully Hall in 2004 was widely praised, and his debut recording for Naxos drew critical acclaim. He has appeared as a soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra and the Houston Symphony, and in 2017 he received the Lincoln Center Emerging Artist's Award.
