About GBH

Among the early architects of British street punk, GBH built a reputation on songs that were loud, fast and rarely lasted longer than three minutes. Formed in 1978 as Charged GBH, they were grouped with peers under the "UK 82" label, and their lyrics targeted British and European culture, violence, atheism and nihilism, with a streak of dark humour running through them. Their influence reached well beyond punk: Metallica frontman James Hetfield has spoken of how bands like GBH marked the start of thrash metal for him, and their pull extended to metal acts such as Exodus and Celtic Frost.

The band's 1982 debut album, City Baby Attacked by Rats, reached No. 17 in the UK Albums Chart and No. 2 in the UK Indie Chart, and its single "Give Me Fire" earned them an appearance on The Tube. A second album, City Babys Revenge, followed in 1983, with more touring in America and Europe and a co-headline slot with The Exploited at the Carlisle Punk Festival. In 1984 they dropped "Charged" from their name. Kai Reder, Joe "Fish" Montanero and, from around 1994, Scott Preece all took the drum stool after Wilf left. Their twelfth studio album, Momentum, arrived on Hellcat Records in 2017.
