About In Flames
Ask anyone tracing the path of Gothenburg's metal scene and In Flames will surface near the front of the queue, alongside At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity. The Swedish group, formed in 1990, has sold more than two million records worldwide. Its membership has shifted repeatedly, yet vocalist Anders Fridén and guitarist Björn Gelotte have been the only constant presences since 1995, and no founding member has remained since Jesper Strömblad departed in 2010.
The early years rested largely on session players until Colony in 1999 brought a settled line-up. Reroute to Remain in 2002 moved the sound away from melodic death metal towards alternative metal, drawing criticism from fans of the heavier material while widening the mainstream audience and lifting sales. Since then the band has released fourteen studio albums, three EPs and two live DVDs, the latest being Foregone in 2023. Their Grammis record stands at seven wins from ten nominations, including Hard Rock/Metal Album of the Year honours for Soundtrack to Your Escape in 2005, Come Clarity in 2007 and A Sense of Purpose in 2009, with Foregone a winner in 2024.
