About João Gomes
Some debut albums arrive quietly, but Eu tenho a senha brought João Gomes to national attention in Brazil in 2021. Gomes was born in Serrita, Pernambuco, the son of a barber and a farmer, and his middle name honours an uncle who was a cowboy. Raised partly in Petrolina, where he sang in a church choir from the age of seven, he sings in forró, a sound shaped by the cowboy traditions of his home region.
Released in June 2021, Eu tenho a senha climbed to number 40 on the Billboard Global 200, while its opening track, "Meu Pedaço de Pecado", topped Spotify's 50 most played in Brazil the following month and entered the platform's Top 50 Global. His first DVD, filmed at Marco Zero in Recife in August 2022, drew 150,000 people and featured Vanessa da Mata, L7nnon and Fagner. In 2023 he became the first piseiro singer nominated for a Latin Grammy, for Raiz, a nomination repeated in 2024 and 2025, and in 2025 he won, for Dominguinho. In October 2025 he launched NPR's international Tiny Desk series in Brazil, with a performance alongside his band.
