About John Gorka
Few singer-songwriters carry a clearer sense of origin than John Gorka, whose roots run from New Jersey to a Pennsylvania college town. Raised in the Colonia section of Woodbridge Township, he studied philosophy and history at Moravian College before the coffee-house circuit took hold. Rolling Stone, in 1991, named him the preeminent male singer-songwriter of the New Folk Movement. He later settled in Minnesota, near Saint Paul.
Gorka began performing solo at Godfrey Daniels in South Bethlehem, opening for acts including Nanci Griffith and Jack Hardy, and in 1984 he was one of six winners of the New Folk competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival. His debut album, I Know, arrived in 1987 on Red House, the label he would return to. After stints with Windham Hill and High Street, he came back to Red House with After Yesterday in 1998, and has since released nine albums with them, most recently unentitled in 2025. In 2010 he joined Lucy Kaplansky and Eliza Gilkyson in the supergroup Red Horse, which toured until July 2014 and made a self-titled album of one another's songs.
