About Kalapana
Kalapana built its reputation in Honolulu, where the pop-rock group is remembered for songs such as "Naturally", "Nightbird" and "The Hurt". The band grew out of a friendship between childhood companions DJ Pratt and Malani Bilyeu, who in 1973 were both playing solo sets around Hawaii Kai. Pooling their talents with Mackey Feary in Pratt's grandfather's garage, they wrote and rehearsed together, debated the meaning of their chosen name, and played their first gig at Chuck's in Hawaii Kai.
Their debut, self-titled Kalapana, was a big success in Hawaii and Japan, and Kalapana II followed in late 1976. That year three concerts at the Waikiki Shell drew 25,000 people, and the group went on to win two Nani Awards, forerunners of the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. After a hiatus, the 1986 comeback album Hurricane was followed by Lava Rock in 1987, two sold-out concerts in the Philippines before crowds of 10,000, and a five-album deal with Pony Canyon Records. Mackey Feary died in February 1999, and that summer the group recorded "Love Under the Sun" for FM Nagoya's compilation.
