About KC & the Sunshine Band

Few disco acts have a name as neatly built as KC and the Sunshine Band. The American group formed in Miami, Florida, in 1973, taking its name from lead vocalist Harry Wayne Casey, known as KC, and from Florida, the Sunshine State. Their records blend disco and funk into dancefloor grooves, and their singles carried that sound across the American charts for much of the decade.

The band grew out of Casey's work at TK Records in Hialeah, Florida. Early singles 'Blow Your Whistle' and 'Sound Your Funky Horn' did well on the US R&B chart, but 'Get Down Tonight', from the 1975 self-titled album, reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 that August. 'That's the Way (I Like It)' followed in late 1975, and the 1976 album Part 3 produced two more chart-toppers, 'I'm Your Boogie Man' and '(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty'. 'Please Don't Go' gave the group its last number one in January 1980, the first of the decade. Casey revived the band in 1991 after a long break, and in 2024 a musical, Who Do Ya Love?, premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
