About mark william lewis
Raised in Stamford Hill, Hackney, Mark William Lewis came to music through the page first. Reading T. S. Eliot, Allen Ginsberg and James Joyce as a boy, and growing up with a father, the writer Nigel Lewis, whose book on metaphor and language was dedicated to him, shaped his thinking before he studied arts at Goldsmiths from 2012. The South London-based songwriter now works across dream pop, indie rock, jazz, folk and experimental music, a blend that resists easy categories.
Lewis started performing after the pandemic in DIY venues such as M.O.T., Ormside Projects and Avalon Cafe. His debut EP, Pleasure Is Everything, was produced in late 2021 in Deptford. The single "Thinner", made with Nina Cristante, came in January 2022, followed by the EP God Complex that spring. His self-released debut album, Living, deals with the heaviness of life and death, and arrived in early 2023 to a 7.6/10 review from Pitchfork. In 2024 he joined Mike Bonema on "Let's Have a Ball", and in 2025 performed with him on NPR Music's Tiny Desk. That June he became the first artist to sign a non-soundtrack album with A24 Music, for his self-titled record.
