About Michelle Gurevich

Michelle Gurevich is a Toronto-born singer-songwriter whose Russian-Jewish heritage runs through her work. Raised with Russian as her first language, she has been described as making slowcore rock and lo-fi pop, and her largest audience sits in Eastern Europe. Before music she spent ten years in the film industry. Her father was an engineer in Soviet Leningrad and her mother a Kirov ballerina, the subject of "Russian Ballerina".

She began by recording in her bedroom, and the name Chinawoman was a spur-of-the-moment joke when GarageBand asked for one. After criticism from those who objected to a non-Chinese woman using the word, she dropped it and performed under her own name. In 2011 she toured Europe supporting Patrick Wolf, and her songs have found screens: "Lovers are Strangers" was the theme for the Latvian film Kolka Cool in 2012, and "Feel More" for the documentary miniseries Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey in 2022. On 30 August 2023 she cancelled her autumn tour, saying she was not well enough to perform.
