Built around a girl-next-door warmth and a sound that recalls the 1990s and 2000s, NewJeans are a South Korean girl group formed by ADOR, a sub-label of Hybe. Minji, Hanni, Haerin and Hyein cultivate that image, and their name plays on jeans as a timeless garment and on 'new genes', a nod to a fresh pop generation.
Their debut single 'Attention' arrived as a surprise video on 22 July 2022, and was followed by 'Hype Boy' and 'Cookie'. 'Hype Boy' became the longest-running Billboard Global 200 entry by a K-pop female act. The January 2023 single album OMG brought 'Ditto', whose run at number one on the Circle Digital Chart was the longest of any song there, and which marked their first entries on the Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart. The EP Get Up topped the US Billboard 200, with lead single 'Super Shy' their highest-charting track on the Global 200, Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart. In 2025 a dispute with Hybe led to an injunction, a hiatus and, by December, Hyein, Haerin and Hanni agreeing to return, while Danielle's contract was terminated and Minji's remains under discussion.
