About North Mississippi Allstars

Hernando, Mississippi, is home to North Mississippi Allstars, a band whose sound is built on the blues and bluegrass of the North Mississippi region and pushed toward rock and other modern forms. Brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson, sons of the Memphis musician and producer Jim Dickinson, formed the group in 1996 with bassist Chris Chew. Luther now plays guitar, lowebow and sings, while Cody covers drums, keyboards, electric washboard and vocals, and the pair have led the band with a rotating cast of supporting musicians since Chew left in 2015.

Their debut, Shake Hands with Shorty, earned a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Blues Album, and the later 51 Phantom and Electric Blue Watermelon were nominated in the same category. The group also won a Blues Music Award for Best New Artist Debut in 2001. Electric Blue Watermelon, from 2005, drew guests including Lucinda Williams and Robert Randolph. Luther joined the Black Crowes in 2007, sharing his time with that band until 2011. Prayer for Peace, from 2017, reached number one on the Billboard Blues Albums Chart, and the latest release is Still Shakin', from 2025.
