Few English progressive rock bands have stayed the course since 1999 quite like The Pineapple Thief, which took shape in Yeovil, Somerset, as a personal vehicle for Bruce Soord. Its name is borrowed from a line of dialogue in the film Eve's Bayou, and the group's current lineup pairs Soord on vocals, guitars and keyboards with Jon Sykes on bass, Steve Kitch on keyboards and Gavin Harrison on drums, whose earlier credits include Porcupine Tree and King Crimson.
The early years were spent finding a shape: Abducting the Unicorn came out on Cyclops Records in 1999, and Variations on a Dream appeared in 2003, shortly before Soord decided to form a full band and add "The" to differentiate the initials from Porcupine Tree. Their 2008 album Tightly Unwound helped relaunch Kscope, and Someone Here Is Missing, with artwork by Storm Thorgerson, followed in 2010. Magnolia arrived in 2014, Your Wilderness in 2016 introduced Gavin Harrison, and the most recent records, Versions of the Truth in 2020 and It Leads to This in February 2024, continue the run.
