About Salvador Sobral
Winning Eurovision for Portugal in 2017 was only part of what made Salvador Sobral's name. Born in Lisbon in 1989 into a formerly noble family, he took a winding route to music: a psychology degree he abandoned, a music school in Barcelona, and bar gigs while an Erasmus student in Mallorca. He is a fan of Chet Baker and of Brazilian singers including Caetano Veloso and Chico Buarque.
His winning song, 'Amar pelos dois', was written and composed by his sister, Luísa Sobral, and his 758 points stand as the highest total for a winner under the current voting system. Earlier, he had finished seventh on Ídolos in 2009, and his debut album Excuse Me reached number 10 on the Portuguese Album Chart in 2016. A heart condition kept him from the first rehearsals and later led to a transplant in December 2017. His second album, Paris, Lisboa, followed in 2019 and is sung in four languages, and BPM came in 2021, earning a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album.
