Chris Conley is the only permanent member of a band that has changed personnel many times since Saves the Day took shape in Princeton, New Jersey. Sprung from a four-piece called Sefler, the group changed its name in 1997 and now lines up with Conley on vocals and guitar, alongside Arun Bali on guitar, Rodrigo Palma on bass and Claudio Rivera on drums. Consequence placed them 18th on its 2019 list of the 100 best pop punk bands.
Their debut, Can't Slow Down, came out on Equal Vision Records in 1998, recorded while the members were still in high school. Through Being Cool followed in 1999 with the single "Shoulder to the Wheel", and the move to Vagrant produced Stay What You Are in 2001, which sold 200,000 copies and spawned "At Your Funeral" and "Freakish". "At Your Funeral" reached No. 76 on the UK Singles Chart that June. In Reverie, issued through DreamWorks in 2003, peaked at 27 on the Billboard 200 before the label abandoned it. Five further albums have since followed, most recently 9, released on 26 October 2018.
