About Self Esteem

Rebecca Lucy Taylor spent more than a decade as half of a Sheffield folk duo before stepping out alone as Self Esteem. The Rotherham-raised multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and songwriter, who also composes for theatre, found the nerve for a solo career partly through RuPaul's Drag Race and its ethos of being unashamed to be confident. Her logo is modelled on Freddie Mercury's signature, a nod to her love of Queen.

Slow Club paused in 2017, and that same September she released her first Self Esteem single, 'Your Wife', on Kick + Clap. Compliments Please followed on Fiction Records in March 2019, averaging 80/100 on Metacritic. Prioritise Pleasure arrived in 2021, led by 'I Do This All the Time', a largely spoken-word single that marked her breakthrough; she won the BBC Music Introducing Artist of the Year Award that year and earned a Mercury Prize nomination in 2022. A Complicated Woman came in 2025. Taylor has also acted, appearing in I Hate Suzie and Smothered, and played Sally Bowles in the West End's Cabaret from September 2023 to March 2024. She is now starring in the West End revival of Teeth 'n' Smiles.
