Simian Mobile Disco, the English electronic duo of James Ford and Jas Shaw, built their reputation on analogue production and a knack for the dancefloor. Formed in 2003, they began as a DJ project alongside their four-piece band Simian, and their name pays tribute to Simeon Coxe III, founder of Silver Apples. Remixes for Muse, Klaxons, the Go! Team and Air brought them attention before their own records caught up, and Ford's production work has kept him in demand well beyond the duo.
Their debut album, Attack Decay Sustain Release, arrived on Wichita Recordings in June 2007, with Ninja of the Go! Team providing vocals on the single "It's the Beat". Earlier, the 2006 underground hit "Hustler", featuring New York singer Char Johnson, had shown what they could do. Second album Temporary Pleasure drew on guests including Gruff Rhys, Alexis Taylor and Beth Ditto, and was followed by Unpatterns in 2012 and Whorl in 2014, recorded at an intimate show in Pioneertown, California. Welcome to Sideways, scheduled for November 2016, carried nine tracks that lean more towards the club than the experimental Whorl.
