About Six By Seven

Six by Seven, also written as SIX.BY SEVEN or six.byseven, are an English indie rock band whose lineup changes shaped much of their career. Friends Of..., as they were first known, played their first gig at the Old Angel pub in Nottingham in late 1992, and the bassist Paul Douglas joined that same year. Their classic line-up brought together singer and guitarist Chris Olley, guitarist Sam Hempton, drummer Chris Davis, Douglas and keyboardist James Flower, a group that has been reshaped more than once since.

Their break came through support slots with Rocket from the Crypt and Girls Against Boys, and the 1996 rename to Six by Seven drew on research linked to the Hubble Space Telescope. A 1997 twelve-inch, 'European Me', led to a five-album deal, and the debut The Things We Make followed in 1998, the year they recorded a session for the John Peel Show. The Closer You Get arrived in 2000, and after a 2008 split the band re-formed in 2012 with Olley and Flower as the only originals. Love And Peace And Sympathy followed in July 2013, and they played the Glade stage at Glastonbury Festival in 2019.
