About Steve Green

Steve Green, born in Portland, Oregon, in 1956, is an American contemporary Christian singer whose work has moved between rock, worship and art song. Raised largely in Argentina by Baptist missionary parents, he first intended to study pre-law at Grand Canyon University until a professor spotted his musical gifts and urged him to develop them. Those gifts led him through several groups before a solo career that now spans decades of recordings.

His first solo album appeared in 1984 on Sparrow Records, the same year he founded Steve Green Ministries. The breakthrough came in 1985 with He Holds the Keys, which earned him the Dove Award for Male Vocalist of the Year. Earlier he had sung tenor with the Gaither Vocal Band and lead with the Christian rock group White Heart. In 1993 he performed at the inaugural Promise Keepers event at Folsom Field in Boulder, Colorado, before 50,000 men, an occasion that inspired his song "Answer the Call". Hold Fast, released in 2018, added orchestral and organ textures to several songs he wrote himself. He has won seven Dove Awards and was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2017.
