About Stone Temple Pilots

Stone Temple Pilots grew out of San Diego clubs into a rock act that became one of the most successful of the 1990s. Brothers Dean and Robert DeLeo, with singer Scott Weiland and drummer Eric Kretz, formed the band in 1989. Later records roamed through psychedelic rock, bossa nova and country. Across the decade they sold more than 17.5 million albums in the United States and 40 million worldwide.

Their 1992 debut, Core, reached No. 3 on the Billboard Albums Chart and produced Sex Type Thing, Plush, Creep and Wicked Garden, though some in the music press dismissed them as grunge imitators. Plush later earned a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1994. Purple followed that June, debuting at number one in the United States with Interstate Love Song, which spent a record fifteen weeks atop the album rock tracks chart. After a split in 2003, members turned to Velvet Revolver and Army of Anyone, reuniting in 2008. Chester Bennington sang on the 2013 EP High Rise, and Jeff Gutt has fronted the band since, on the 2018 self-titled album and Perdida in 2020.
