About Timbiriche
Few acts in Mexican pop began as a television assignment, yet Timbiriche did exactly that. Televisa's children's division assembled the group in 1981 as a counterpart to Spain's Parchís, and its name borrows from a paper-and-pencil dots-and-boxes game. The sound moved from bubbly children's pop towards teen pop and then a more grown-up style, and the group is regarded as one of the most influential Latin pop acts of the 1980s and early 1990s.
Their debut arrived on 30 April 1982 on the television show Siempre en Domingo, with Miguel Bosé as godfather, and the first album carried Amor para tí and Somos amigos. A record presented as a live album followed in 1983, with studio audience noise added afterwards, and it included covers of Grease's Summer Nights and Toni Basil's Mickey. Erik Rubín joined as a third male singer that December. The 1984 album Vaselina, drawn from a Spanish-language staging of Grease, produced Rayo Rebelde and Amor primero. When Benny Ibarra left in 1985, Eduardo Capetillo took over his role. The group has reunited in 1998, 2007 and 2017.
