About Trampled By Turtles
Theft gave Trampled by Turtles its shape. When Dave Simonett's musical equipment was stolen in 2003, he was left with only an acoustic guitar, and that restriction pushed him toward bluegrass and folk. The Duluth, Minnesota group he built around that sound plays fast, restless music that owes as much to rock and roll as to bluegrass, and it has never been content to stay inside the genre's borders.
Simonett started the project as a side venture in 2003 and recruited newcomers to the acoustic scene, including fiddler Ryan Young, who had previously drummed in a speed metal act. The band has since released ten full albums. Its early records Songs from a Ghost Town (2004), Blue Sky and the Devil (2005) and Trouble (2007) were followed by Duluth in 2008, which won it recognition in the bluegrass community and peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard bluegrass chart. Three of its releases have reached No. 1 on that chart, and Palomino, the fifth, stayed in the Top 10 for 52 straight weeks. Festival bookings followed. The most recent album, Alpenglow, came out on 28 October 2022.
