About Tuomas Holopainen

Tuomas Holopainen's keyboards and songwriting sit at the heart of Nightwish, the Finnish symphonic metal group he co-founded and where he is the primary writer. His compositions often borrow the broad, harmonic sweep of film scores, and that cinematic instinct extends beyond the band. Several of his songs have appeared in movie soundtracks, and he co-wrote the music for Nightwish's film Imaginaerum, released in November 2012.

Before Nightwish, Holopainen recorded keyboards for the black metal band Darkwoods My Betrothed and collaborated with For My Pain... Nightwish began in 1996 as an acoustic project built around his songs, and Tarja Turunen's voice pushed it towards metal. Angels Fall First (1997) and Oceanborn (1998) laid the groundwork, and Century Child (2002) brought orchestras from Finland and the United Kingdom into the sound. Once (2004) marked their breakthrough in the United States, with the singles "Nemo" and "Wish I Had an Angel" played on MTV. In 2014 he released his first solo album, Music Inspired by the Life and Times of Scrooge.
