About Unbelievable Truth
Restraint runs through everything Unbelievable Truth have recorded. Led by Andy Yorke, with Nigel Powell, Jason Moulster and Jim Crosskey, the British rock band have been described as making slow, melancholy ballads with a country tint, wrapped in acoustic guitars and minor chords. They formed in Oxford in 1993 and took their name from Hal Hartley's film The Unbelievable Truth.
A crisis of confidence led to a split in 1995, and Yorke spent time in Russia before returning in 1996. The single "Building" came out in February 1997 on Oxford's Shifty Disco, followed by the album Almost Here on Virgin in 1998. Virgin dropped the band, yet the record still found some success. Sorrythankyou (2000) was the first Shifty Disco release to be pressed on vinyl, and the farewell show at Oxford's Zodiac later appeared as disc two of the self-published Misc. Music. Reunions have since included a 2005 tsunami benefit and 25th-anniversary gigs in 2023, and the band's latest work is the trio of 2025 singles "Citizens Band", "Madison" and "Non-Combatant".
