About Versengold
Few German folk acts build a catalogue on historical texts set to modern folk arrangements, yet Versengold has done exactly that since 2003. The Osterholz-Scharmbeck group grew out of a hobby project tied to LARP and medieval reenactment, and its early sound leaned on cittern and hurdy-gurdy before drifting towards Celtic colour and then rock. Malte Hoyer's lyrics often tell stories that resist a single reading, a quality that gives the band's repertoire its range, from instrumentals and drinking songs to ballads and socially critical pieces such as Punsch statt Putsch.
Hoerensagen appeared in October 2005, followed by Allgebraeu in April 2006. Ketzerey arrived in May 2008 after a run of departures, and the remaining trio of Hoyer, Heuer and Willms recorded Dreck am Stecken in 2011 as an all-male line-up. With Sean Lang and Eike Otten in place, Zeitlos reached 22nd on the German album chart in 2015, and Funkenflug went to second place in 2017. Was kost die Welt topped the German chart in 2022. In November 2023 the band celebrated its 20-year anniversary with around 10,000 fans at the Barclays Arena in Hamburg, and Eingenordet followed in January 2026.
