About What So Not

Christopher John Emerson, the producer known as Emoh Instead, began What So Not as a partnership with the Australian DJ Flume, and the project has since taken its electronic music to Coachella, Bonnaroo, Ultra Music Festival and Lollapalooza. Its records pair percussive force with melodic lift and frequently bring in guest vocalists and rappers. Its songs have charted in Australia and the US, and one made the Triple J Hottest 100.

The duo's debut EP, 7 Dollar Bill, came out in November 2011, followed by The Quack in 2013, which featured Action Bronson on Owsla. Flume announced his departure in February 2015, leaving the Gemini EP as the last release under the duo name; its track 'Gemini' with George Maple reached number 52 on the Australian Singles chart. The debut album Not All the Beautiful Things arrived on 9 March 2018 with guests including Skrillex and Toto. A hiatus announced in February 2020 gave way in 2021 to 'The Change' featuring DMA's, the four-track EP Motions followed in August 2024, and 'Everest', with Alina Pash, arrived in May 2026.
