About Whiplash

Whiplash came out of Passaic, New Jersey, in 1984, and the band is counted among the first East Coast thrash metal acts of the 1980s. Tony Portaro, who sings and plays guitar, is the only original member still in the line-up, and he remains its centre. Despite little major success, the group's drummer Tony Scaglione, who moved in and out of the band from the start, once stood in for Dave Lombardo on Slayer's Reign in Blood tour.

Their debut, Power and Pain, appeared on Roadrunner Records in 1986, followed by Ticket to Mayhem in 1987 and Insult to Injury in 1989, the last with Glenn Hansen on vocals. After a split and a reunion in 1995, the group released Cult of One and Sit Stand Kneel Prey, then Thrashback in 1998. Bassist Tony Bono died in 2002. The 2009 album Unborn Again brought a run of European festivals, including Wacken Open Air. After signing with Metal Blade Records in 2018, the band saw an earlier album, Old School American Way, teased for nearly a decade before it was scrapped in favour of Thrashquake, released in limited form in early 2026 to coincide with a European tour with Napalm Death.
