About Yuri
Yuri, born Yuridia Valenzuela Canseco in Veracruz in January 1964, has built a career that runs across singing, acting and television presenting. Her voice moves comfortably between pop, dance, ranchera and tropical music, a versatility that carried her records through Latin America during the 1980s and early 1990s. Her acting work, in telenovelas and films, ran alongside the records and gave her a face as well as a voice.
Her 1978 debut, Tú iluminas mi vida, did not achieve commercial success, but Esperanzas in 1980 brought her first major hit, with the title track and singles such as "Primer amor" reaching high chart positions across Latin America. Her 1982 album Llena de dulzura earned gold certification and produced "Maldita primavera", while the single "El panda de Chapultepec" sold more than a million copies. At the OTI Festival in 1984 she placed third with "Tiempos mejores". In the mid-1990s she stepped back to convert to Protestantism and devoted herself to gospel, returning to secular music in 2002. She has since released 29 studio albums and sold over 20 million copies worldwide, and in 2018 received the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
