About Ritz Theatre

This 1926 theatre on East Jersey Street in Elizabeth, New Jersey, began life as a vaudeville and silent-film house, with an Art Deco interior built to seat 2,791 patrons. It stands on the site of an earlier opera house from 1865 and later ran as a movie palace before closing in 1979. Local preservationists stepped in to save it in 1989, though the money fell short of what was needed.
