About St Giles Cathedral

St Giles' is known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh and is one of the city's three cathedrals. Building work began in the 1300s, with extensions running into the early 1500s, and later alterations in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries added the Thistle Chapel. The church is closely bound up with many turning points in Scottish history, not least John Knox, who served as its minister after the Reformation. It remains under the care of the Church of Scotland.
