Harry Styles premiered a song he wrote for his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne during his sold-out show at Madison Square Garden in New York on Friday 16 October 2026, the second anniversary of Payne's death. The performance was reported by Rolling Stone.

Before playing it, Styles spoke to the audience about the venue and about the people around him. "I feel incredibly lucky to get to play these shows here in New York, and this building means a lot to me," he said, according to Rolling Stone. He went on: "There are so many people in my life, friends and people that I've worked with that I wouldn't have been able to do this without. And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends."

"I'm gonna play you a song I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that's all right."

Rolling Stone reports that the crowd was visibly emotional as Styles spoke. He also told the audience: "I'm sure a lot of you have been through similar things. I hope you haven't. But really, it's just about looking after each other." The report does not name the song, and it says nothing about any plans to release it.

The anniversary

Payne died on 16 October 2024, aged 31, from injuries sustained after falling from the balcony of his hotel room. Rolling Stone notes that in the two years since, each member of One Direction (Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik) has made new music in some form. It says their return to the public eye in an official capacity has given fans a space to grieve and to celebrate Payne's life.

Styles and Payne are both British, and One Direction have a large following in the UK, so the date is likely to carry particular weight for many British fans.

The residency

The show was part of Styles' 30-night run at Madison Square Garden. That residency forms part of Together, Together, a 50-show, seven-city series supporting his fourth studio album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally, which Rolling Stone says was released on 6 March.

In March, Styles spoke about Payne's death in an interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe. He said he had struggled with how others related to his grief. "I think there was a period when he passed away where I really struggled with acknowledging how strange it is to have people kind of own part of your grief in a way," he told Lowe. "I think the greatest way you can honor your friends who pass away is by living your life to the fullest."

The song's live debut came without a public announcement of any recording or release. For now it is known only through Styles' own account of when he wrote it and for whom.
